Statues, monuments, plaques, memorials, fountains and headstones are often an interesting and historically important part of our urban landscape. They are often focal points to our cities great Victorian parks, gardens and squares. Sadly many have gone some are in a very poor condition and those that remain and may even be important landmarks, are still often neglected.
In many cases the true message and spirit to which the monument, memorial is erected is disfigured, its meaning diluted by the apparent neglect and sometimes disrepair into which it has fallen. This is none more apparent in the example of war memorials.
The attitude of least interventive first always applies and the plan of action is discussed carefully with the client or custodian. Sometimes making the correct decision as to the proper course of action is simple but at other times careful observation, consideration and expertise is needed. It is prudent for organisations to consider maintenance needs at the onset of a project so that adequate provision can be made.
